Tanner still has not received his Christmas package. So much for saving things to open on Christmas day. He said that his companion did not get one either because it was sent back because it contained hot chocolate. Crazy Mexico!! I think that DHL or Mexico does not like Mormon or Christmas.
Skypeing with Tanner was awesome!! He looked so good and happy. He told us about being at a convenience store when it was being robbed. He and his companion went to the store late one night to buy orange juice. His companion paid and there was a man in front of Tanner. Tanner said the guy pulled out his gun and told the clerk to give him all the money. Tanner said he quietly put his money back in his pocket. The robber got the money from the clerk looked at Tanner and his companion and left. Tanner was not able to get his orange juice because the store closed afterwards. I am grateful that the robber did not care about Tanner and his companion. I would say that the Lord is looking out for his servants.
When Tanner emailed he said that they were suppose to watch “Inside Out” but I guess the other Elders decided that they did not want to do that and played soccer instead. Tanner said “they sold our birthright for a mess of pottage by playing soccer instead. They could’ve done that some other time but they can’t see a movie that isn’t a church one till next Christmas or in the case of many of us till we go home. But that’s okay, I forgive them.” They had pizza and then a meal with their landlords. They exchange Christmas gifts and Tanner received a tie, some Star Wars stuff and grass locust. He gave his companion a Doctrine and Covents DVD.
Short emails from Tanner this week. Just long enough to let us know when he would be Skype on Christmas Day. He still has not received his Christmas package, hopefully it get there before Christmas. But I am not counting on it.
Tanner wanted to know why the Elders in the Christmas village were so big. I told them that they were spiritual giants. HE wanted to know why there were no people around them, he said that they were hiding like they do from him.
Transfer Week! Tanner or his companion did not get transferred this week but some in the mission office were transferred. The head financial secretary was transferred so now Tanner is the head financial secretary. He has to train the new Elders in one transfer so that when he gets transferred in January the office will be ready.
Tanner finally had time to email us back. He is busy teaching the “fine art” of finances to Elder Call. Tanner said that he really does not know that much about it. He talked about how crazy his mission was. The 12th was the day of the Virgin Guadalupe. It is sad how so many people believe in her or some other saint but not in God or Jesus.
Tanner was able to watch the dedication of the Tijuana temple. He said it was cool.
Tanner said, “Elder Robertson and I think that, that advent calendar must be magic or something. because it will have us read a scripture and then later we will hear someone quote it during the day or in a talk or something that goes along with the activity it says to do will happen. It is crazy,”
Tanner sent some ideas for some food that he wants us to learn to cook. Pozole and agua de sandia and also tacos dorados. It would be fun to see if we can make these things at home and be eating some of the same things that Tanner is eating.
One year is over and we survived. Tanner can’t believe that one year is over already. Sometimes it feels like it went by so quickly and other times it seems like forever since he has been home. They had investigator come to church with them this week, one is better than none. Javier is back with his family but keeps telling Tanner that they will see them tomorrow but tomorrow never comes. Transfers are next week but Tanner or his companion will not be transferred. One of the elders in the mission office will be transferred and then Tanner will have one transfer to teach the new Elder how to do all the office stuff. Tanner said that he will miss the fun that they have in the office but he will not miss the stress of the office work. I guess being in an office will not be his career choice when he come home.
As a zone they did a service project. They helped a hoarder clean out their house so that someone could live in a room. They moved everything up on the roof of the house. It looked like a very big job but they looked like they were enjoying themselves while doing it. I love the cowboy hats!
This week was Thanksgiving for us. Mexico does not celebrate Thanksgiving but Tanner did send a picture of his Thanksgiving dinner. He did not say if was a members house or what the circumstances were behind it. Questions to ask. Wonder if it was turkey enchiladas?
It has been a good week for Tanner. He was able to get two more investigators. Javier’s foot is feeling better, so much that he left his family so that he could drink more. Praying that he has a change of heart and returns to his family and starts taking lessons again.
Tanner said that he needed new shoes that his were needing to be replaced. He sent pictures of his shoes and he was right they really needed to be replaced. One year of serving the Lord really shows in his shoes.
Finally a picture of Tanner and his companion Elder Robertson. So glad to see him looking so happy.
