Eight months down and sixteen more to go!! Tanner said that it rains a lot in Mexico City and even though it is summer it still gets cool enough to wear long sleeve shirts and sometimes a coat.
No baptism this week for Tanner but the Elders that are serving in the same ward as Tanner had a baptism. Tanner said that it was a miracle baptism. He said the man they baptized will be a great member of the Church.
During a Zone Conference Tanner had Hus picture taken with some more of the other missionaries in his Zone. He really liked the picture of him and Elder Walters. Tanner said that Elder Walters was his best friend in the mission. Elder Walters is from Hawaii .
I can’t believe that it has been one year since Tanner opened his mission call. Time has flown by.
Transfers are coming up in a couple weeks and Tanner is pretty sure that he will get transferred. He said about 40 missionaries are going home and that they will only be getting like 10 more missionaries. He said none of them will be from the United States. It said that they are trying to make Mexico more self sufficient.
Tanner is sad that his package is still stuck in Mexico City waiting to be returned to the United States. He loves getting letters from everyone.
Tanner is teaching some kids and he says it is hard because kids don’t listen.
He says they go to church alone because their parents are not members. Hopefully they will get baptized.
Tanner is loving his mission and the people of Mexico.
Tanner has been working hard while still having fun. His companion and he dressed up like luchadores for a Sister in their ward for her birthday. Tanner is the one in the gold mask.
I love that ward members care enough about their missionaries to plan a surprise Fourth of July party. Looks like a Nathan’s hot dog eating contest.
Tanner was telling us that in his mission there are five missionaries from Las Vegas and he does not know any of them. His companion Elder Cardenas last companion was also from Las Vegas. It is a small world.
The scripture of the week is 3 Nephi 14:7 and 8. I like this scripture because God will respond to our prayers and answer our questions, clear up our doubts, and comfort us. But we have to ask. So I would like to invite you all to pray for answers when you have questions or doubts becasue God will answer. Maybe not right away but he will answer. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Tanner is really enjoying his mission and says he is working hard. He enjoys his companion and they work well together.
Tanner has always enjoyed listening to country music. He really likes Johnny Cash and listened to his music on his iPod when he was home. Now he can’t listen to that kind of music, but Tanner still sings it. He says that is one of his mission sins. His companion tells him that he talks in his sleep, both in English and Spanish. His companion says that it sounds like he is singing Johnny Cash’ s ” My Name is Sue” on his sleep. Funny guy!
Tanner did not have much to say this week. He told us that he tried tongue and liked it. I told him about the Supreme Courts decision on same sex marriage. He was surprised that it had been approved so fast. He thought it would happen but years from now. He then bore his testimony. He said, “It says in the scriptures it is the prayers of the righteous that keep the wicked from being destroyed so if we continue in faith we will be fine. Trust in God and never stop. These things are prohesied in the scriptures by His prophets and we know it looks bad and hopeless sometimes. But we will be protected in this world, we can still stand in holy places when the world around us is not holy. We need to keep the commandments. If we love God we will keep them (John 14:15). Read the scriptures everyday, even if it is just 5 verses, pray every morning and night and at meal times, and go to church every sunday. The church had a leadership conference this year around the time of conference and they have said that it is one of the most serious problems in the church today. We need to go. We must go, this is part of our Salvation, we need to take the sacrament every week. No exceptions. We need to pay our tithing and fast offerings. We cannot rob God. (Malachi 3:8, 9) He made this earth and gave us everything our money is not our own, but he does not ask for all of it, just 10%. As creator of this earth God does not really need our money, if he wants money he could show the church where an oil deposit is and we would be set forever. But he requires the faith of the members to sacrifice this little bit to him. This little bit and he promises us so many blessings, he promises to open the windows of heaven to us ( Malachi 3:10) and we will not have enough room for the blessings. God is obligated to bless us if we do what He asks of us( D&C 82:10). I know that by following his commandments we will be blessed and so much more than we think we could be. He loves us so much and wants us to be happy, if we follow the commandments we will be happy. But we must show our faith and the things that are asked of us, because we can return with Him if we do so, we can be like Him if we do so, and we can be together forever if we do so. I love you guys so much and want us to be happy forever together, but we have to choose together to follow Christ. And that is my prayer that all of us can work a bit harder to do it and don’t procrastinate the day we change. That is something I need to work on a lot. But we need to do it today, because tomorrow never comes. So please do the things God asks of you today, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen. ”
I am grateful for his testimony and the growth he has made.
